How difficult is it to learn Portuguese from Spanish?
I wish to learn Portuguese, but the University I am attending only offers Spanish. I have elected to learn spanish, but was wondering about the extent to which my knowledge of Spanish will be transferrable to Portuguese?
If it helps, I’m pretty good at learning languages.
Knowledge of Spanish makes learning Portuguese alot easier, that’s for sure. So it will be easy, especially if you’re good at learning languages.

“Salsa and rock music help young viewers learn some basic words and phrases in Spanish. Enthusiastic performers present basic words and phrases in both English and Spanish. Repetition encourages retention of what was learned. A fun way to be introduced to a new language.”—Parents Guide to Childrens Media Award
“The basic vocabulary and sentence structures that are drilled into us in spanish class come alive in this video. The characters are as enjoyable to see as they are to hear, and the music is pleasant. The video component made a world of difference to the student testers—even the most reluctant participants spoke out freely when they could see the sentences and phrases written on the screen. Any learning tool that elevates student involvement to 100% is a valuable one indeed.”—Parents Choice Recommended

Where is the best place to completely learn Spanish for free on the internet?
Obviously the best thing to do is immerse myself for a long time, but that’s not really an option. Is there anything out there for me or should I just break down and buy some software to learn spanish fluently?
Livemocha.com is a great resource, especially since it’s free. But you won’t become fluent using it. Your best bet is to combine it with some other learning tools. Get a few books, some language CD’s, turn your TV and radio to a Spanish stations and find some Spanish speaking friends. Buena suerte!

What is the best program to use to learn Spanish?
My husband and I are wanting to learn to speak Spanish fluently. Not only is it somewhat of a life goal (to be fluent in another language), but both of our jobs would benefit from it. I know the best way is to listen, read, and try to talk in spanish. But of course you have to have somewhat of a base line to get started. What programs or any other tools have you had success with?
